Why Nutrition Before Conception Matters More Than You Think

By Hailie Hermes, RD

The Forgotten Foundation of Fertility

Across cultures and generations, food has always been seen as the foundation for fertility. Long before supplements or IVF, women and their partners prepared their bodies for conception with nutrient-dense broths, organ meats, fish, and vegetables grown in mineral-rich soil.

Today, science validates what ancestral wisdom and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have always known: what you eat before conception influences fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and even your baby’s long-term health.

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science

In TCM, fertility begins with nourishing the blood and supporting yin energy — restoring the body’s reserves and hormonal rhythm.

Modern nutrition echoes this idea, highlighting the need for iron, zinc, omega-3s, and other nutrients that build healthy eggs, sperm, and hormones.

When we translate this through a functional lens, the message is clear: your nutrition in the months before conception sets the stage for everything that follows.

In my upcoming class, I’ll show how simple, real-food choices can help restore those nutrient reserves and improve hormonal balance — even through the busy holiday season.

Preconception Nutrition: It Takes Two

Fertility is a shared story. Both eggs and sperm take about 90 days to mature, meaning what you and your partner eat (and how you live) during that time directly impacts conception and embryo health.

Even in couples pursuing IVF, studies show that optimizing nutrition beforehand can improve fertilization rates, embryo quality, and live birth outcomes.

This is where functional nutrition shines — nourishing both partners’ metabolic and reproductive health before pregnancy begins.

 The “Christmas Conception” Paradox

September is the most common birth month in the U.S., meaning many conceptions occur around Christmas — a time when:

  • Vitamin D levels are at their lowest,
  • Sugar and alcohol intake are at their highest, and
  • Stress and sleep deprivation run rampant.

This combination can disrupt hormones, increase inflammation, and deplete nutrients just when the body needs them most.  I’ll be sharing how to support healthy nutrient levels and blood sugar naturally during this time — because sometimes, the small shifts make the biggest difference.

Blood Sugar and Fertility: The Missing Link

Blood sugar balance is one of the most overlooked keys to fertility. When glucose and insulin spike repeatedly, it can interfere with ovulation, hormone production, and even egg quality.

Stable blood sugar supports steady energy, reduces inflammation, and promotes healthy hormone rhythm — not only for conception but for a smoother pregnancy ahead.

In our class, I’ll walk you through the practical steps to balance blood sugar while utilizing an abundance mindset, so you can feel nourished and resilient all season long.

Bringing It All Together

What our ancestors called “preparing the womb,” we now understand as optimizing nutrient status, metabolic health, and hormone balance. Whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or with IVF, nutrition is not a side note — it’s the soil from which healthy life grows.
